Aiden came into our lives in July, 2006. My step-son, Daniel Edwards, was working at Go-Karts Plus, an indoor go-cart track near the Richmond International Raceway. It was a typical July summer in Richmond, with an evening thunderstorm rolling by.
This wasn’t an ordinary storm, however. This storm produced very heavy rain, power outages, and even hail. Daniel and his workmates were standing on a platform overlooking a ravine out back of the race track. A mother dog and her puppy were out in the storm; the mother jumped the ditch, and the puppy followed. Unfortunately, the puppy didn’t make it. He was being rushed with the water towards a drainpipe. The mother dog stopped and looked and looked but could not find her puppy. Daniel saw the whole thing. He jumped into action, recuing the puppy before it was swallowed by certain death.
Daniel’s father had put his foot down about bringing any more pets into the household. After all, we already had Riley the Dog (a 90 pound “dobermut”), and my two cats were soon to move in. Daniel brought home the puppy to take care of him until he could find a suitable home. The next morning, he told his Dad he had the puppy in his bedroom. “Don’t worry dad,” he said. “I’m not going to keep him; but I couldn’t watch him drown.” His father assured him he did the right thing. I get an email with this picture in it:

Needless to say, the puppy stayed. Aiden is now four years old, around 70 pounds, and is sweet as can be. He is truly a “people” dog; he really likes it when his peoples are around. There was a time that he would play catch until the cows came home, but he must be leaving his childhood because he will sometimes keep the ball from US so he can rest a bit. He’s not afraid of thunderstorms, but if an acorn hits the roof, he jumps on the bed to alert us, as Chicken Little would, that the sky is INDEED falling.
We also call him smiley dog because he’s always so happy.
And we’re thankful everyday that Daniel was a puppy superhero.
